What Is A Quinceañera And How To Celebrate One?

We discuss the history of the Quinceañera and how to host a beautiful party.

A Brief History

In Ancient Meso-America, indigenous communities including the Aztecs, Mayans and Toltecs, commemorated the end of puberty and beginning of adulthood for a young girl between the ages of 14-15. They would hold grand ceremonies for the young women and prepare them for their new role in the community such as artisan or healer.

Beginning in the 1500s, Spaniards introduced their own elements to the transition period for young women. Instead of preparing them for a role in the community, the celebration was a way to present respectable young women (middle and upper classes) to potential husbands and prepare them for marriage and motherhood. They also introduced Catholic elements, such as the Mass and blessing to the ceremony.

In the 18th century, the 13th Duchess of Alba (Spain) is said to have invited several commoner teenage girls to don gowns and attend a lavish ball at her palace. Thereby, marking the inclusion of lower-class and non-aristocratic members into the celebration. This enhanced marriage prospects for girls of all social backgrounds.

In 1864, Austrian-born Maximilian I became Emperor of Mexico. He and his wife Charlotte of Belgium introduced new European customs to the celebration. They added the waltz, a popular dance style of the day, and the bouffant style dress that we associate with quinceañeras today. The concept of having a court is also attributed to them. The celebration that began as a communal gathering evolved into a debutante ball open to all.

How to Celebrate

Today, any girl can celebrate turning 15. Parties are generally very lavish affairs, but girls don't need to worry about marriage anytime soon. (Thankfully!) A quinceañera generally consists of a Mass in honor of the birthday girl or a blessing performed by clergy. The religious ceremony is followed by a banquet style reception with delicious food, dancing, and entertainment.

A quinceañera traditionally has a court of young women and men as well as an escort who accompanies her. There are several rituals that most girls incorporate into their big day. Most will receive a Bible or rosary during the ceremony. They will also exchange the last doll and officially don their first pair of high heeled shoes. Girls typically elect a heartfelt song for their first dance with their father or another relative. Then the dance floor opens to the guests, and they party the night away.
