Thinking About Hiring A Cheap Planner? Think Again

We explore the downsides of hiring planners who promise cheap prices.

We've heard the horror stories. An event planner promises to organize an amazing event. They only charge $500 for wedding day of coordination or organize your engagement party for $100. They can deliver results, right? Wrong.

Vendors that sell themselves with promises of cheap pricing are a red flag. While budget is a very important consideration for hosts, their ultimate goal is to have a beautiful, fun event. What is the point of only paying $500, but then having a disorganized wedding or party.

An example we use is that of Jennifer (using alias to protect her privacy). She wanted a beautiful quinceañera for her eldest daughter. She eventually decided on a planner who claimed she could do everything for $600. But when the day arrived, the flowers were the wrong color. The chivari chairs she paid for were never delivered. The photographer was given the wrong address. She had to run to the grocery store last minute and purchase mismatched flowers. The quinceañera's uncle had to go pick up the chairs from the vendor. The photographer arrived an hour late to the party. Needless to say, it was not ideal.

When the time came for Jennifer's youngest daughter to have her quince, she immediately called us. We coordinated for $1500. Everyone arrived on time. The flowers, napkins, and linens were the exact color she wanted. The food was delicious, and the cake was gorgeous. We ended up saving her over $1000 by recommending vendors from our preferred list. The party was a hit with family and friends.

Unfortunately, Jennifer's case with her eldest daughter is not isolated. These kind of vendors overpromise and underdeliver. This isn't to say that they don't have good intentions. The case is that generally these vendors are inexperienced. They haven't been in the industry very long, and they are trying to gain experience. On the other hand, your wedding becomes an experiment for them. Sometimes it will turn out okay, but these vendors are not prepared for the hiccups that may emerge.

A professional and experienced planner has seen many scenarios and will be equipped to respond to them. A great planner will help you save time and money. There are many ways you can save money on your event. One expense that shouldn't be spared is a great event planner.
